Sep 11, 2016: 136th Men's U.S. Open: Stan Wawrinka defeats World No:1 Novak Djokovik (6-7, 1-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3)..
Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka beat world number one Novak Djokovic with a scintillating display to win his first US Open and third Grand Slam title.
Wawrinka, seeded third, won 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 to add the US title to his 2014 Australia Open title and his French Open triumph last year.
The 31-year-old hit 46 winners in a brilliant display of shot-making.
Serbia's Djokovic made a strong start but struggled physically as the final entered a fourth hour in New York.
Wawrinka has now won all three Grand Slam finals he has played and his last 11 finals in a row, and has become the oldest male winner of the US Open since 35-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1970.
The 2016 US Open was the 136th edition of tennis' US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year. It took place on outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City.
In the men's singles competition, Stan Wawrinka defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in the final. Angelique Kerber defeated Karolina Pliskova in the women's singles to become the first German player to win the tournament since Steffi Graf in 1996. 2015 women's singles champion Flavia Pennetta did not defend her title as she had retired at the end of the 2015 season.

Injured Djokovic
Bidding for his third major tournament title this season after completing the non-calendar year Grand Slam at Roland Garros, Djokovic, who struggled with a left wrist injury earlier in the North American hard-court swing, arrived in New York under a cloud of uncertainty as to whether he would even contest his 12th US Open. He would ultimately come up short against Wawrinka 6-7(1), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in the final. It was a run deeper than even he expected
For second match in a row, Stan Wawrinka came from a set behind to beat his competitor and this time in the Final. Wawrinka beat Novak Djokovic 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 to lift his first US Open title and his third Grand Slam. This means the Swiss player has won the Australian Open, the French Open and now the US Open with only the Wimbledon missing from his kitty. Co-incidentally, Stan's last two Grand Slam Final wins - including this one at Flushing Meadows - have come against Djokovic.
In the final on Sunday, Djokovic played through toe issues in the fourth set for which he received medical attention but the biggest factor in Novak's defeat could be attributed to his poor break point conversion with the Serb only converting 3 of 17 chances at a miserable 18%.
To add to Wawrinka's remarkable win, he had come within a point of crashing out in the third round against Dan Evans of Great Britain.
Djokovic still world No:1iin Tennis.Despite the setback, Djokovic will retain the top spot in the Emirates ATP Rankings. However, he will need to quickly refocus, as he will be defending four titles at upcoming tournaments. Stan Wawrinka wins his first US Open with four sets win over Novak Djokovic.
