Aug 19:: 2016:  PV Sindhu becomes first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal : RIO Olympics 2016.
Dec 19:: 2016:  Cricket: Karun Nair makes history with a triple ton

PV Sindhu had taken Indian badminton, the country's high-performing sport for a while now, a notch higher.

RIO DE JANEIRO: Aug 19, 2016: PV SINDHU became India's first woman to win an Olympics silver medal on Friday, creating history and pulling an entire country out of its Games gloom with a stunning display of talent, power and grace.
A nation watched, its billion hearts beating, as the 21-year-old pushed world champion Spain's Carolina Marin to the edge after building anticipation for Indians across the globe ahead of the biggest showpiece final of the quadrennial for women's badminton.
It's been 12 years since the flag on the podium - used to both flaunt talent and wipe tears - has been something other than that of China. And the Olympics summit clash couldn't have managed two better women in the ring. In the end, Marin left the pavilion dazed with her 19-21, 21-12, 21-15 victory over the Indian in 83 minutes.
Sindhu stayed in the game without rolling over, as Marin's opponents have tended to, under her blistering attack of strokes and screams. Then, she stood on the podium, smiling politely, calm and poised. It was here that coach Gopichand, who joined the celebrations from the back of the crowd, standing on a chair, gestured the last of his instructions for the day - bite into the medal, as is tradition. This was a medal that meant as much to him as it did to the shuttler

Who is PV Sindhu - India's badminton heroine in Rio
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu on Thursday became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in the Olympics. Spain's Carolina Marin beat her 21-19, 21-12, 21-15 at the badminton final on Thursday.
She has come a long way - from a 16-year-old watching Saina Nehwal win the 2012 London Olympics bronze to being India's lone badminton medal hope in the 2016 Games.
Prior to the Games, she said, "The biggest dream I am chasing now is an Olympic medal. I remember watching Saina in London. Then I was ranked World No. 25. I always longed to be there and I am all excited to represent India in Rio." She broke into the Top 20 in 2012, and is currently ranked no. 10 in the world.
Sindhu scripted a stellar 22-20, 21-19 win against former World No. 1 and London Games silver medallist Wang Yihan to enter the women's semifinals. Her fierce strokeplay and aggressive cross-court returns have been the highlights of her game so far. She rated her win over the London Olympics silver medallist as one of the best moments of her career

The bigger reward:
She first made her mark in the badminton circles in 2013. She won her maiden grand prix gold at the Malaysian Open, went on to win the first of her hat-trick of titles at the Macau Open. The bigger reward in the form of Arjuna award was the icing on the cake.
With former volleyball players for parents - her father Ramanna is an Arjuna awardee - it is only natural that sports had always been her calling. But why badminton? Inspired by her iconic mentor, Pullela Gopichand's exploits on court, she started wielding the racquet at the age of eight. She was awarded the FICCI Breakthrough Sportsperson of the Year in 2014 and NDTV Indian of the Year 2014, the year in which she won her second consecutive medal at the World Championships.
In March 2015, P.V. Sindhu became the youngest recipient of the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour. She is the second-highest-ranked women's singles player from India after Olympic bronze medalist and world No. 2 Saina Nehwal.
With a methodical style of play, considered to be defensive - building up with long rallies to lay seize to a point as and when an opening arises, she has evolved remarkably well to streamline her method towards winning. At the same time, she has recently added a more aggressive facet to her game, being more vociferous and playing attacking shots that put the opponent on the backfoot.

Cricket: India Vs England 5th test match: Karun Nair makes history with a triple tonr.

Karun Nair became the 30th Test batsman in history to score a 300 on Dec 19, 2016. He did so against England at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. His strike rate, at 79.52, was fourth best among all triple centurions.
Karun Nair became the second Indian batsmen to score a triple century after Virender Sehwag. With the Chennai fans roaring behind him, Karun Nair completed his triple ton and made history at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday, 19 Dec, 2016. Interestingly, Sehwag scored two triple centuries viz. 319 in Chennai and 309 in Multan. Karun Nair became the third player in Test history, and the first Indian, to turn his maiden hundred into a triple century. He continued to torment the England bowlers after the dismissal of Murali Vijay and Ravichandran Ashwin. In the company of Ravindra Jadeja, Karun Nair added another century partnership. Playing in his third match, Karun Nair played a scintillating knock. He has replaced Ajinkya Rahane in the side.
India vs England 5th Test Day 4 Highlights 2016 || karun nair 300 Runs

Back in March 2008, the MA Chidambaram Stadium witnessed the first triple-hundred on Indian soil, as Virender Sehwag plundered 319 against South Africa. Eight-and-a-half years later, the stadium's revamped stands became the backdrop to the first triple-hundred by any Indian batsman apart from Sehwag. That batsman, Karun Nair, was playing his third Test match, and was only playing because India's middle order had lost two of its regular occupants to injury.
