Aug 31,2016 The Brazilian Senate votes (61-20) to impeach the President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff.

Aug 31, 2016: Dilma Rousseff Is Ousted as Brazil's President in Impeachment Vote

BRASILIA - The Senate on Wednesday Aug 31, 2016, impeached Dilma Rousseff, Brazil's first female president, and removed her from office for the rest of her term, the capstone of a power struggle that has consumed the nation for months and toppled one of the hemisphere's most powerful political parties..
The Senate voted 61 to 20 to convict Ms. Rousseff on charges of manipulating the federal budget in an effort to conceal the nation's mounting economic problems.
But the final removal of Ms. Rousseff, who was suspended in May to face trial, was much more than a judgment of guilt on any charge. It was a verdict on her leadership and the slipping fortunes of Latin America's largest country
The impeachment puts a definitive end to 13 years of governing by the leftist Workers' Party, an era during which Brazil's economy boomed, lifting millions into the middle class and raising the country's profile on the global stage.
Simply put, Ms Rousseff was accused of breaking fiscal laws. She was found guilty of moving funds between government budgets, which is illegal under Brazilian law. Ms Rousseff denied having done anything illegal and said that moving money between budgets was common practice among her predecessors in office.
Under Brazil's constitution, the vice-president takes over on an interim basis if the president is suspended from office. That is how the PMDB's Michel Temer went from being Ms Rousseff's vice-president to inaugurating the Olympic Games as Brazil's acting president. However, things did not work out smoothly for Mr Cunha either. He had to resign in July over corruption allegations, which he denies.
There were mass demonstrations in major Brazilian cities demanding that she resign. Many Brazilians said they were fed up with the high levels of corruption in Brazilian politics.

But with some of the politicians who backed her impeachment also under investigation for either mismanagement or corruption, no party seems untouched by the allegations.

Rousseff Testifies in Impeachment Trial

Dilma Rousseff, Brazil's suspended president, testified at her impeachment trial in the Senate in Brasilia on Monday, saying, "Don't expect me to stay silent like a coward."

Dilma Vana Rousseff is a Brazilian economist and politician who served as the 36th President of Brazil from 2011 until her impeachment and removal from office on 31 August 2016. She is the first woman to have held that office. She is the first woman to have held that office. She was previously the Chief of Staff of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from 2005 to 2010.
The daughter of a Bulgarian immigrant, Rousseff was raised in an upper middle class household in Belo Horizonte. She became a socialist during her youth and, following the 1964 coup detat, joined various left-wing and Marxist urban guerrilla groups that fought against the military dictatorship. Rousseff was eventually captured, tortured, and condemned to jail between 1970 and 1972.
After her release, Rousseff rebuilt her life in Porto Alegre with Carlos Araujo, who would be her husband for 30 years. Both helped found the Democratic Labour Party (PDT) in Rio Grande do Sul, participating in several of the party's electoral campaigns. She became the Secretary of the Treasury of the City of Porto Alegre in the Alceu Collares Administration, and later the Secretary of Energy of the State of Rio Grande do Sul under both the Collares and Olivio Dutra Administrations. In 2000, after an internal dispute in the Dutra cabinet, she left the PDT and joined the Workers' Party (PT)
. In 2002, Rousseff joined the committee responsible for the energy policy of presidential candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who, after winning the election, invited her to become Minister of Energy. In 2005, a political crisis triggered by the Mensalao corruption scandal led to the resignation of Chief of Staff Jose Dirceu. Rousseff took over the post, remaining in office until 31 March 2010, when she stepped down in order to run for president. She was elected in a run-off on 31 October 2010, beating Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) candidate Jose Serra, and re-elected on 26 October 2014 with a narrow second round victory over Aecio Neves, also of the PSDB.
Impeachment proceedings against Rousseff were officially accepted by the Chamber of Deputies on 3 December 2015. On 12 May 2016, the Senate of Brazil temporarily suspended President Rousseff's powers and duties for up to six months or until the Senate reaches a verdict: to remove her from office if found guilty or to acquit her from the crimes charged. Vice President Michel Temer assumed her powers and duties as Acting President of Brazil during the suspension. On 31 August 2016, the Senate voted 61-20 in favor of impeachment, finding Rousseff guilty of breaking budgetary laws and removing her from office.
